The Newcastle United defender is clearly ready for another shot at the top flight.
While Newcastle United will be disappointed with their EFL Cup quarter-final defeat to Hull City there were reasons to be optimistic, not least the performance of centre-back Jamaal Lascelles.
There is a reason the 23-year-old is Newcastle skipper at such a young age, and he showed that as he led by example against their top flight opponents, dominating throughout and doing everything in his power to ensure his side progressed to the last four of the competition.
That was not to be, with the visitors falling short in the penalty shootout, yet on this evidence Lascelles will be one of Newcastle’s standout performers if, as expected, they return to the Premier League next season.
Lascelles has had to wait patiently for his chances at St. James’ Park. However he started to build up a head of steam at the back end of last season and he has followed that up this time round with a string of fine displays.
Against Hull, Lascelles showed he is ready to perform week in, week out against top players and while they will face far tougher opposition it was another big step in the right direction.
Newcastle will undoubtedly have to strengthen again in the summer but one player they can already count on for their next adventure is their exciting young captain.
