Liverpool have signed a number of players from Southampton over the past few seasons.

Phil Thompson made a joke about Liverpool and Southampton on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, November 26, 2016).

The former England international defender joked that the amount of money Liverpool have paid in transfer fees over the past two years to recruit players from Southampton would have been enough to buy the Saints.

The Reds have signed a number of players from Premier League rivals Southampton in recent years, including Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana.

According to a recent report in The Daily Star, Liverpool are interested in signing defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the January transfer window.

Liverpool legend Thompson has suggested that the 25-year-old Netherlands international centre-back would be a good signing for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

“We could have bought their football club for the amount of money we have gave them over the last couple of years,” joked Thompson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, November 26, 2016).

“I think Van Dijk, not just for Liverpool, but for a couple of clubs (would be a good signing),” added Thompson.
