Ross McCormack is reportedly fighting for his future at Aston Villa.

According to The Mirror, attacker Ross McCormack is already fighting for his Aston Villa future – and Steve Bruce wants to land a defensive midfielder in January.

Villa splashed the cash on new signings over the summer, with McCormack arriving from Fulham for a fee believed to be around £12m (BBC Sport), and there was understandable excitement at his arrival.

The Scot, 30, hit 42 goals in 100 games for Fulham following a 2014 move from Leeds United, and was seen as a player who could score and create the goals to fire Villa back to the Premier League.

So far though, McCormack has struggled to make an impact at Villa Park. He's notched just two goals and one assist in 13 Championship appearances, and looks to be out of favour under Steve Bruce already.

The Mirror now report that McCormack is already fighting for his future at Villa, as Bruce wants to re-tool an 'unbalanced' squad, which he feels contains too many strikers.

It's claimed that McCormack faces a battle to convince Bruce that he should be a long-term fixture at Villa Park, with suggestions that he could be heading for the exit door despite only signing a four-year contract with the club over the summer.

The report adds that Bruce plans to bring in a new holding midfielder in January, making that position a real priority when the transfer window opens.

Bruce does have the likes of Mile Jedinak, Ashley Westwood, Gary Gardner and summer signing Aaron Tshibola at his disposal, but Bruce seemingly wants more stability in the middle of the park, and Tony Xia will help funds his plans to try and take Villa back to the Premier League.

Do you think McCormack deserves more time at Villa?
