David Moyes impressed by good form of 'steady-eddy' Billy Jones

Jones is currently making the Sunderland right-back role his own.

Sunderland boss David Moyes has said he is not surprised by the form of Billy Jones, which seems to have impressed the Black Cats manager, the Chronicle reports.

Jones has been in the starting line-up in recent games, replacing summer signing Javier Manquillo at right-back. Moyes says that Manquillo has not done anything wrong but thought Jones was a different solution for the role and has labelled him a 'steady-eddy'.

Moyes is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “His form has been very good. I have not been surprised.

“I had known him, not personally, but I had watched him a lot at Preston North End and West Brom earlier in his career and always thought he was a steady-Eddy type of player.

“He wouldn’t let you down too often."

Injuries has kept Jones out of the side at the start of the season, but Moyes seems keen to maintain that competition for places although Manquillo has dropped out of the starting XI.

He added: “I don’t think Javi [Manquillo] has played badly, I just felt we just needed to find another solution for what we were doing."

Jones is the type of player where you more often than not get some solid, consistent performances from him. There does not seem to be any real danger in playing him as you can usually predict the kind of game he would have - solid if unspectacular.
