Celtic ace Erik Sviatchenko comments on his record playing alongside Jozo Simunovic

The pair have formed an excellent partnership at the heart of the Celtic defence.

Erik Sviatchenko has claimed that Celtic's defensive record when he and Jozo Simunovic play together provides him with plenty of pride, the Daily Record reports.

The Hoops have been exceptional this season. And while it is the likes of Moussa Dembele and James Forrest that have taken many of the headlines, their defensive form has been just as important a reason for their success as any other.

Brendan Rodgers has had several centre-back options to choose from this term, but appears to have settled on the pairing of Sviatchenko and Simunovic in recent times.

And the pair have justified that faith, with the clean sheet in the League Cup final win over Aberdeen at the weekend proving to be the latest in a long line of shutouts by the Hoops when the two men have played.

And Sviatchenko explained how much he is enjoying playing alongside the Croatian.

"The clean sheet record is a real source of pride. We don't want to lose any goals," he said, as reported by the Record.

"It's a lot to do with confidence. Every time we walk on the pitch we just know that we are going to be difficult a team to beat. That's the most important thing. If the opponent has trouble scoring against you then you have a great chance of winning.

"If you have that kind of belief it's so important and this team is succeeding because we are close to each other."

Incredibly, Celtic have not conceded a goal in a domestic game since Souleymane Coulibaly's stunning strike for Kilmarnock in the clash that the Hoops would go on to win 6-1 all the way back in September.

And if the pair can maintain their form at the heart of the Bhoys' defence as their partnership develops further, it may not just be in domestic games that they manage to put together a run of clean sheets in future seasons.
