Pundit Andy Townsend has told BBC Radio Five Live that it's great to see Garry Monk doing well at Leeds United.
Leeds face Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup this evening, with Monk looking to take the club's outstanding league form to Anfield.
Leeds manager Garry Monk
Saturday's 2-1 win over Rotherham United took Leeds up into fifth place in the Championship table, and it's now just one defeat in the last six games for Monk's men.
After years of underachievement in the mid-table of the Championship, Leeds are now pushing for a play-off place – and will be hoping to prove their promotion credentials by giving Liverpool a run for their money this evening.
Much of the praise must go to Monk, who has excelled at Elland Road and subsequently avoided the sack, which is no mean feat for a Leeds manager, given the presence of trigger-happy chairman Massimo Cellino.
Leeds United manager Garry Monk
Ahead of tonight's game with Liverpool, pundit Andy Townsend has had his say on Monk – and it's fair to say that the former Republic of Ireland international is impressed with the Leeds manager.
Townsend told BBC Radio Five Live that Monk could have been in the running for a 'better job' than Leeds after his work at Swansea City, and was worried about whether Monk had made the right call to go to Elland Road, where a number of managers have struggled in recent years.
Townsend added that it's great to see Monk succeeding at Leeds, and jokingly offered him some advice – don't lose too many matches, for Cellino will be sharpening his axe again!
"I think there were probably a few eyebrows raised when Garry took that job, because when he came out of Swansea he was very much en vogue, and was very much a manager that people were looking at that was going to take - with all respect to Leeds United and their position - a better job," said Townsend.
"When he walked into that scenario, which is one where you don't know what's happening at that place from one minute to the next, I certainly looked at it and thought 'Wow Garry, I hope you've made the right call'. It's great to see him doing well, and he's got them upwardly mobile. Leeds United is a great football club, despite what has been going on in recent times, and a great club to manage I should imagine. Just don't lose too many matches Garry, or you'll be gone! He's doing well at the minute though," he added.
