Tottenham youngster is a beacon of hope amid a disappointing year of transfers.

Tottenham have had a largely positive 2016 but in the transfer market they have been left wanting more.

This is despite considerable investment in players; the coaching staff are yet to get a return on those brought in to compete for places.

Victor Wanyama has been predictably successful, continuing his Southampton form, but Georges-Kevin N'Koudou, Vincent Janssen, Moussa Sissoko and Pau Lopez are yet to make a positive impact.

Perhaps the best signing long-term this calendar year could be a player signed for a cut price fee in January from Ebbsfleet United; youngster Shilow Tracey.

Tracey signed at just 17 after impressing on trial, with Spurs beating a host of Premier League clubs to his signature.

He spent last season with the under-18 squad, and this season has progressed into the under-23s.

Last night was a standout game for Tracey as he netted two goals to secure the team a 2-2 draw away to Sunderland.

Tracey's brace outshone Sunderland winger Adnan Januzaj, once considered a superstar at Manchester United, who had scored the opener in the contest.

Tracey is an attacking midfielder who has assumed Josh Onomah's spot in the under-23 team with the England under-19 ace stepping up to train with the first team squad.

Now 18, the youngster has made three appearances in the UEFA Youth League for Spurs, and is gaining the trust of his coaches.

Tottenham have shown under Mauricio Pochettino that they will hand chances to youngsters who deserve it, and Tracey will no doubt dream of a Dele Alli-like ascent to stardom.

So far he is on the right track, and his performance last night showed his impressive progress.

It will take a little while for his signing to really pay off, but in the face of weak competition, he could turn out to be the best addition Tottenham have made this calendar year.
