Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has been explaining to the club's official website how he retains concentration in games where he doesn't have much to do.

It's a slightly different experience for the summer signing from Mainz who will have been busier during his time in goal for the Bundesliga club.

Since his arrival at Liverpool, he has been behind a side that has been dominant in games, when he may not have any saves to make or crosses to claim for long periods of the game.

But communication appears to be key, as he told liverpoolfc.com: "You stay in the game by talking to the defence and following the game - you can't switch off.

"As a goalkeeper, that's always the case, whether you [face] zero or 10 shots, you have to be ready.

"Sometimes there are games like this so it's nothing brand new. Of course, here it happens more often than [at Mainz] but it's nothing you can really train."

Last weekend's game was a classic example of Karius not having much to do as the Reds played out a 0-0 draw with Southampton. A lot of the 23-year-old's work was being available for a backpass from his defenders in order to restart attacks.

Liverpool control a lot of games and have long spells in possession. Rather than facing sides that shoot from all angles, the Reds' keeper has to be concentrating throughout the game. He may not be in the thick of the action for much of the time, but his interventions could prove crucial.

In recent games there have been signs that Karius is starting to find his feet as the Liverpool number one. He pulled off a couple of fine saves in the second half against Crystal Palace, and a string of saves in the hammering of Watford a week later. Though he had nothing to do in terms of saves at Southampton, there were clearly signs that his understanding with the central defensive duo of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren has developed.
