Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has hailed the clinical side of top scorer Dwight Gayle, the Chronicle reports.

Gayle has been the Magpies main goalscoring threat this season, having found the net on 13 occasions, helping Rafa Benitez's side open up a five-point lead at the top of the Championship.

The summer signing from Crystal Palace is currently the leading goalscorer in the Championship, and Lascelles feels that if Gayle continues this run of form for the duration of the campaign then the side has a real chance of achieving their ambitions this year.

Gayle is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “He’s doing really well.

“He’s very clinical with his shots. It’s my job, and that of a few of the other lads, to keep him doing that.

“Ultimately, if he’s banging in goals for us, then we’re going to have a really good chance. I don’t want to get into his head too much, but he’s a good player, and needs to keep doing what he’s doing.

“He works really hard. If he stays focused, we should be fine.”

Newcastle have also been strong at the back for much of the season, which has just as much an effect on their current league position.

This weekend, they will go in search of their 10th consecutive win in all competitions when they face Blackburn Rovers, and will look to maintain their lead over the rest at the top of the table.

Newcastle have shown that other areas of the side can contribute on the goals front, but having someone who regularly puts the ball in the back of the net is helping them tick along nicely.
