Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson could emerge as a target for Championship leaders Newcastle United, the Chronicle reports.

The newspaper, which cites unnamed sources in Hampshire, claims that Wilson is 'thought to be a player who could interest the Magpies' - adding that, being young and British, he 'fits the bill for the type of player they would be looking to add to their squad going forward'.

Wilson played alongside Newcastle wingers Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie at Bournemouth last season, the latter of whom was successfully lured to the second tier by Rafa Benitez in the summer.

Whether the 24-year-old would wish to follow suit in January, however, remains to be seen, having played 11 games for Bournemouth this term.

Newcastle are the Championship's top scorers this season, with summer signing Dwight Gayle leading the division's chart for goals and Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez also on form.

Such is the Magpies' strength in depth, another striker, Daryl Murphy, for whom they are said to have paid £3 million in the summer, is yet to feature for his new side in the league.

Wilson, who was linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United earlier this year (the Sun), has scored 31 goals in 74 appearances for the Cherries, with whom he was promoted from the Championship in 2015.
