Mauricio Pochettino's team selection in Tottenham Hotspur's match against Monaco on Tuesday has come under criticism.

Paul Merson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on November 24th, that he feels sorry for Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham were heavily criticised in midweek, after they crashed out of the Champions League, following a defeat against Monaco.

Pochettino made some changes to his starting line-up, with Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen both left on the substitutes’ bench.

And Merson feels that Pochettino rested the defensive pair, as he is under pressure to guide Spurs back into the top four this season.

“The Premier League is money,” Merson said. “They’ve looked at it, Tottenham, and thought ‘we’re not winning the Champions League, let’s make sure we get into the top four again and get another lorry load of money.’

“They don’t want to be going into the new stadium without Champions League football.”

Tottenham have been hugely disappointing in European action this season, with their only victory in the Champions League coming against CSKA Moscow.

Spurs have otherwise fallen short in European competition, and their form is starting to become a worry.

Tottenham have won just once in their last nine matches, with the pressure starting to build on Pochettino.

Tottenham’s next match comes this weekend, when they take on Chelsea in Premier League action.
