Speaking on Sky Sports Now broadcast at 10:03 am on November 23rd, Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder, and part-time Sky Sports pundit Steve Sidwell questioned the logic behind Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino's decision to rest two key defenders for their crucial Champions League tie against Monaco last night.

The move backfired on the Argentine, as his side were constantly opened up, and could arguably be pinpointed as the main contributing factor to their loss - which saw them crash out of Europe's premier competition.

And Sidwell, who has 493 career appearances to his name, was at a loss to explain the thinking behind Pochettino's decision to leave out Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker, telling Sky Sports Now:

"I don't see the logic in it, you know. If you look at their league form, with their back-four this year, the likes of Rose and Walker and the tenacity in their attacking play, along with how solid they have been as a back-four, as well as all over the pitch in the league, and then he goes and rests them in a huge game like that. I just can't see why he did it."

The Spurs boss is bound to receive heavy criticism for his side's performances in Europe this term, and rightly so.

Their recruitment over the summer has to be questioned, with the acquisition of Victor Wanyama being arguably the only signing who has actually strengthened their stating XI.

To compete at the highest level, there can be a case made that Tottenham need to sign a better quality of player next summer, or risk once again falling short on the European stage.
