Former footballer Tony Cascarino has told The Times he was unimpressed with the approach of Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli during their defeat to Monaco.

Spurs lost the game 2-1 and were eliminated from the Champions League as a result, with one match of the group stages remaining.

Outstanding goalkeeper Hugo Lloris aside, there was not a Tottenham player who did themselves justice on the night.

Cascarino singled out Alli, accusing the midfielder of being too casual in possession.

He told The Times that Alli 'lost the plot', adding: "Dele Alli is a talented player but he should know when to take the sensible option rather than try his little flicks.

"This was not a night for a Harlem Globetrotters performance from the away side but rather a solid professional display."

Alli missed a second half chance when the ball fell to him from a corner, but to his credit he did manage to win the equalising penalty, which Harry Kane scored.

Spurs conceded a second goal within seconds of the restart and could not find a way through.

Alli completed a creditable 84.4 per cent of his passes, but was dispossessed five times - more than any player on the pitch.

He created two goalscoring chances, with his one effort on goal landing off target.
