Derby County may have to alter their plans if they are seeking right-back cover in the January transfer window.

The Rams are expected to be without Cyrus Christie until February at least, leaving the ageing Chris Baird and winger Ikechi Anya as back-ups.

HITC sources understand that Derby were one of three clubs, along with Premier League pair Bournemouth and Swansea City, chasing Wigan Athletic teen Luke Burke as a result.

Burke, however, has since signed a contract extension until June 2018, having impressed in his five Championship outings so far, which only strengthens Wigan's bargaining position should another club come in.

The new development might not kill off the Rams' interest entirely, mind, with Christie out of contract himself at the end of the current campaign.

The 23-year-old has made over a century of appearances since arriving at Pride Park from Coventry City three years ago, during Steve McClaren's first spell as Derby boss.

McClaren is also said to want to add to his attack in the New Year, with Birmingham City's on-loan Burnley man Lukas Jutkiewicz a target according to the Sun.
