Speaking to BBC Sport, former Premier League striker Jason Roberts has claimed Jermain Defoe should not be playing for Sunderland.

The veteran striker was once again in top form on Saturday afternoon as he scored the Black Cats' opening goal in the win over Hull City.

It was his seventh goal so far this season and his 150th in the Premier League to date, taking him level with Michael Owen as the seventh highest goalscorer in the history of the division.

It continued his fine form over the last year and a half, after he scored 15 goals in the league last year despite Sunderland’s struggles.

Roberts is a big fan and claims he should not be playing for Sunderland given his undeniable ability.

“Jermain Defoe is one of the best finishers of his generation, he should not be playing for a team like Sunderland,” he told BBC Sport.

“You have to applaud that, brilliant. He has scored 150 goals, he is up there with the greats of the Premier League.”

Sunderland will now be hoping that Defoe can continue to bag the goals they need to help them avoid relegation this season.

The win over Hull was just their second victory this season and took them to eight points overall, just three points from safety.

Defoe is key to their hopes of avoiding the drop again and they will be keen for him to keep adding to his 150 goals moving forward.
