Being a Sunderland fan right now must be pretty tough. The Black Cats are sat in the relegation zone after 12 games, while their rivals Newcastle United are flying high at the top of the Championship under Rafael Benitez.
While it is a difficult time to support the Wearside club, there have certainly been a lot of times when following Sunderland has been nothing short of euphoric. The Tyne-Wear derby is taking a year off this season, with Newcastle and Sunderland competing in different divisions, which is good news for the Magpies because their recent form in the fixture is nothing short of horrific. Until Aleksandar Mitrovic's late equaliser at St James' Park last season, Sunderland had won six derbies in a row.
Fabio Borini became a hero on Wearside with his derby-winning goal back in 2013, and he has scored a fair few famous goals while wearing red and white. Gus Poyet guided Sunderland to the Capital One Cup final in 2014, and Borini actually put the Black Cats in front at Wembley. They may have ended up losing the game, but that cup final will remain close to the hearts of Sunderland supporters.

Beating Newcastle six times in a row just isn't enough for Sunderland, so they went one further last season and actually relegated the Toon Army to the Championship when they beat Everton last season to secure their Premier League status and condemn Newcastle to the league below.
Yes, things are not great right now if you are a Sunderland fan, but remember, things can only get better.
