Leicester City and West Ham United are reportedly competing for Mamadou Sakho’s signature.

According to The Mirror, West Ham United are keen to sign Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho in January – but they face competition from Premier League rivals Leicester City.

The Hammers have struggled defensively at times this season, with only Sunderland and Hull City – both of whom lie in the bottom three of the Premier League – conceding more goals so far this season.

With four goals conceded in five games, West Ham have tightened up a little at the back, but manager Slaven Bilic may focus his attentions on signing a new defender during the January transfer window, with some fans feeling that James Tomkins hasn’t been replaced since his summer move to Crystal Palace.

The Mirror claim that the Hammers have set their sights on Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, who has been frozen out at Anfield by manager Jurgen Klopp.

Signed by Brendan Rodgers in 2013 having dropped down the pecking order with Paris Saint-Germain, Sakho racked up 79 appearances for Liverpool in his first three seasons with the club – but has yet to play this season.

The report notes that the 26-year-old fell out with manager Klopp during a pre-season tour of America, and with concerns over his attitude and application, and he’s now behind the likes of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan in the pecking order.

It’s claimed that both Liverpool and Sakho himself are happy to part ways in January, and he could be offered another chance to impress in the Premier League as Leicester and West Ham are reportedly battling for his signature.

The Hammers could certainly find room Sakho in their defence, whilst Leicester’s veteran duo Robert Huth and Wes Morgan haven’t been able to replicate last season’s displays, and Sakho would give Claudio Ranieri a younger option at centre back.
