Celtic were humbled by the Bundesliga side last night.

Borussia Monchengladbach's Lars Stindl scores their first goal against Celtic

Stiliyan Petrov has told Eir Sport that Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton should not escape criticism for one of the goals that the Hoops conceded in the Champions League last night.

Celtic were beaten 2-0 by Borussia Monchengladbach at Parkhead as Brendan Rodgers’s side failed to build on the 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the previous matchday.

Defender Kolo Toure has attracted plenty of criticism for the role he played in both of the Bundesliga side’s goals last night.

Lars Stindl opened the scoring on 57 minutes after the Premier League veteran tried and failed to usher the ball out of play, before having his pocket picked, and then a loose ball from the Ivorian saw Andre Hahn gallop through on goal and finish well into the top corner 20 minutes later.

Toure was undoubtedly to blame for the second goal, but Celtic legend Petrov claims that the Israeli midfielder is not immune from criticism for his role in Monchengladbach’s opener.

He told Eir Sport: “I think Bitton could have done better. I think because he stayed back he gave the opportunity to the player to pick that pass. Obviously the other two midfielders weren’t organised enough and the defenders were all over the place.”

The result leaves Celtic rock bottom of Group C and two points behind the German side who have now put themselves in pole position to win the Europa League qualification spot.

Of course, Rodgers’s side could in theory still reach the knockout stages of the Champions League, let alone the Europa League. They are only three points behind Man City, but it is still a very, very big ask for them.

Their remaining Group C games come away at City and Monchengladbach and home to Barcelona, who beat them 7-0 in the opener.
