Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport that Tottenham Hotspur can take heart from the way that they held on to claim a point against Bayer Leverkusen in Champions League action last night.

Spurs picked up a 0-0 draw against the Bundesliga side, despite being put on the back foot for large periods in the second half.

Tottenham had Hugo Lloris to thank for preserving their point, but Ferdinand felt that Mauricio Pochettino would have been happy with the effort that his team put in during the contest.

“Pochettino will cling on to the fact that they ground out a result away from home,” the former Manchester United defender said. “They worked hard as a team, and there were a couple of great saves from Lloris. They had to work for it, but I think they’ll see this as a good point.”

Most of Spurs’ best chances came during the first-half, when they made a bright start to the match.

Both Erik Lamela and Vincent Janssen had presentable opportunities to score, but they failed to find the back of the net.

In the second period, Leverkusen began to grow into the game and only a breathtaking save from Lloris stopped them from taking all three points.

Tottenham’s draw with Leverkusen means that they remain in second place in their Champions League group.

Spurs’ next European match comes against Leverkusen at Wembley in November.
