Reading fell to a late defeat against Aston Villa after conceding a stoppage-time penalty.

A 90th-minute penalty gave Steve Bruce his first win as Aston Villa manager at the expense of Jaap Stam's Reading side this week.

Villa took the lead in the 38th minute through Jonathan Kodja, who followed up his penalty against Wolves with another strike, making it three goals since moving to Villa Park.

Reading were handed a chance to draw level after the break when Aly Cissokho gave away a second penalty in as many games for a foul on Gareth McLeary. Midfielder Danny Williams stepped up but his spot kick was saved by Villa keeper Pierluigi Golini, only for Yann Kermorgant to head home the rebound.

It looked as though both sides were destined to share the points, only for a second penalty to be awarded in the 90th minute.

This time it was Bruce's side who were awarded a chance from 12 yards, which Jordan Ayew slotted home to make it 2-1 and give Villa their first away win of the season.

After going behind, Reading boss Stam finally turned to his bench, making his first and only substitution, leaving many fans at the Madejski and on Twitter questioning why the former Manchester United centre-back was so reluctant to make changes.
