Reading fell to a late defeat against Aston Villa after conceding a stoppage-time penalty.
A 90th-minute penalty gave Steve Bruce his first win as Aston Villa manager at the expense of Jaap Stam's Reading side this week.
Villa took the lead in the 38th minute through Jonathan Kodja, who followed up his penalty against Wolves with another strike, making it three goals since moving to Villa Park.
Reading were handed a chance to draw level after the break when Aly Cissokho gave away a second penalty in as many games for a foul on Gareth McLeary. Midfielder Danny Williams stepped up but his spot kick was saved by Villa keeper Pierluigi Golini, only for Yann Kermorgant to head home the rebound.
It looked as though both sides were destined to share the points, only for a second penalty to be awarded in the 90th minute.
This time it was Bruce's side who were awarded a chance from 12 yards, which Jordan Ayew slotted home to make it 2-1 and give Villa their first away win of the season.
After going behind, Reading boss Stam finally turned to his bench, making his first and only substitution, leaving many fans at the Madejski and on Twitter questioning why the former Manchester United centre-back was so reluctant to make changes.
Where was the sub Stam? Has to take the blame here. Don't think we'd be in this position if we had fresh legs on. #Readingfc— Ben Parsons (@BenParsons89) October 18, 2016
1st sub we made was after Villa's winner. Why does Stam hate subs? Could've done with fresh legs. #readingfc— Michael Doyle (@michael92doyle) October 18, 2016
Bruce totally out coached Stam tonight, 3 fresh legs against a tired team. Stam needs to use subs more effectively . #readingfc— Stuart (@StuartFenton17) October 18, 2016
That penalty was clearly down to tiredness can't see how Stam made no subs! #readingfc— Royals (@Berkshire_Boys) October 18, 2016
Stam reminds me of myself when playing FIFA, forget the subs exist #readingfc— Jake Reilly (@jcr98rdg) October 18, 2016
Never seen a team so tired in last 10 minutes. You have 3 subs for a reason Stam use them!!!#readingfc— Alex (@vinty__) October 18, 2016
Well done Jaap. Not making any subs during the 90 was a masterclass. #ReadingFC— Lowy (@Concept_Jack) October 18, 2016
