This Liverpool defender looks to be the man for all occasions.
Liverpool's Joel Matip in action with Manchester United's Zlatan Ibrahimovic
While it is fair to say the Liverpool defence is still not firing on all cylinders, one player who has held up his side of the equation is Joel Matip. The Cameroonian international came to the club in the summer on a free transfer with very little fanfare attached, but he has been in superb from the off for Jurgen Klopp's side.
Liverpool's Joel Matip heads at goal
Despite being relatively unknown in England, the 25 year-old made nearly 200 appearances for German club Schalke, and with Klopp a long term fan, he clearly made his signing a priority. Matip has made a fine start start to his Liverpool career and just like the way he was brought to the club, there is nothing overly flashy about his play. The strength of Matip is his cool and calm demeanour that puts his fellow defenders and Liverpool fans at ease.
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp celebrates with Joel Matip after the game
Deceptively strong, Matip has more than held his own against the likes of Diego Costa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season and it was his performance against Ibrahimovic that really stood out. He restricted the veteran striker to only three touches inside the penalty box and one shot on target in the 90 minutes while Matip made three interceptions, three clearances and one successful tackle for the match. It capped another miserable game for Ibrahimovic against the Reds as his scoring drought against them reached five games.
With the Liverpool defence looking for a true leader to follow the legendary figures of Sami Hyppia and Jamie Carragher, Matip could be the man to fill the breach. If the 25-year-old keeps up his level of performance, do not be surprised to see him in the mix for the team of the year selection.
