Celtic hero and current pundit Chris Sutton has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Brendan Rodgers will choose Erik Sviatchenko alongside Kolo Toure in the heart of his defence this evening.

The Bhoys are back in Champions League action this evening as they take on Borussia Monchengladbach at Celtic Park, with manager Rodgers hoping to build on their performance against Manchester City.

That 3-3 draw against City last month was another superb European night at Celtic Park, and Celtic will be hoping for a win tonight to strengthen their claim for third place in Group C.

Whilst Barcelona – who beat Celtic 7-0 in September – and Manchester City are expected to go through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, third place offers qualification for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

It will almost certainly come down to Celtic and Gladbach for third place, and manager Rodgers will be picking a team to try and claim Celtic's first three points of the group stage.

Ahead of tonight's game, former Celtic striker and current pundit Chris Sutton has been discussing Rodgers' team selection, in particular which centre backs will start the game.

Sutton predicted to The Scottish Sun that Rodgers will choose Erik Sviatchenko and Kolo Toure in the heart of defence, despite Jozo Simunovic starting alongside Sviatchenko against Motherwell.

Sutton thinks Celtic will now have an extended look at Croatian defender Simunovic after seeing his deadline day move to Torino collapse, noting that injuries have restricted his impact at Celtic so far.

“Brendan will stick with Sviatchenko, but Simunovic is still an interesting one,” said Sutton. “Celtic agreed a fee with Torino for him, which seemed a bit odd from the outside. But he’s back and they’ll have an extended look at him now.”

“Things like that often happen and he may turn out to be a top player. Injuries have hampered him and they’re both in a situation where the jury is out. Toure will be in there and I think it’ll be Sviatchenko beside him,” he added.
