Rafael Benitez has told the Chronicle that that he wants Newcastle United fans to stay behind the team.

Newcastle’s supporters have shown staggering amounts of loyalty to their side, following their relegation to the Championship.

The Magpies have regularly sold out St. James’ Park, and they have also been backed by huge numbers on their travels.

Benitez has really appreciated the support of Newcastle’s fans so far, but the Spanish boss has urged supporters to continue their backing throughout the campaign.

“I am really pleased - it’s magnificent. They are doing really well," he said.

“It’s still the same message from me, hopefully, they are behind the team and behind the players because that is a key factor for us.

“Not just for one game, the whole season.”

At the moment the mood around Newcastle is very buoyant, as the Tynesiders are in great form.

Newcastle have won eight of their last 10 matches to move up to second place in the Championship table.

If Newcastle continue to pick up wins with such regularity then tickets will be in even greater demand as the season progresses.

Newcastle’s next match comes against Barnsley later this evening, when they are set to be backed by over 6,000 travelling fans at Oakwell.
