Everton star Leighton Baines has reportedly suffered another injury setback.
Everton's Leighton Baines receives treatment after sustaining an injury
Everton left-back Leighton Baines has suffered another setback on his return from a hamstring injury (Liverpool Echo) and the Blues should now seriously consider a long-term replacement for the 31-year-old.
Whilst the former Wigan Athletic man has been an integral part of the Everton side since his move to Goodison Park in 2007, his influence on the first team setup has diminished over the past year or so, with injuries seemingly becoming more frequent as the years go by.
He has appeared in just 23 of Everton's last 46 games, and questions are being asked as to whether age is catching up with the 30-capped England international.
Ricardo Rodriguez scores the first goal for Wolfsburg from the penalty spot
The 24-year-old already has 43 caps under his belt for his country, and has been a pivotal member of the Wolfsburg squad, making 157 appearances during his four-and-a-half year spell with the Bundesliga outfit.
The speedy full-back showcased his class for Switzerland at the Euros over the summer, and is a competent defender, whilst also being a useful asset in an attacking sense.
Wolfsburg's Ricardo Rodriguez in action
Rodriguez is a set-piece specialist, which will surely be a prerequisite for whoever is identified to eventually succeed Baines in the Everton side, what with the Englishman's free-kick and corner taking ability.
The Swiss international's contract does not expire until the summer of 2019, so it will surely take a fairly substantial offer to tempt Wolfsburg into selling, but it is an avenue that Ronald Koeman should pursue nevertheless.
If Everton managed to sign Rodriguez, his quality would help lift the Blues to another level, and ensure that Baines - great player though he was and still is, will not be missed.
