Benitez will be calling upon striker Dwight Gayle for goals once again, given that the summer signing's two goals against Brentford taking him to nine goals in just ten league games this season.

The 26-year-old, snapped up from Crystal Palace, has become Newcastle's latest hero in front of goal, and he's now been discussing his target for the campaign.

Speaking to The Mirror, Gayle has stated that he wants to score 20 goals this season, but acknowledged that his personal tally isn't the main thing, and promotion back to the Premier League is Newcastle's ultimate aim.

Gayle also discussed the performances of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who has racked up four assists in his last three games as he becomes Newcastle's chief supplier.

Gayle stated that Shelvey, a January signing from Swansea, will help him reach his 20-goal target, but admitted that he was getting into the midfielder's head before games earlier this season, telling him to grab an assist having failed to do so early into the campaign.

“Twenty is where you start as a striker and I just want to be winning games for the team,” said Gayle. “The main thing for me is not even goals, I just want to get promoted and get back up to the Premier League with the club. But yes, 20 is a good marker personally. We need to score goals to get promoted and I’m happy to help out but we’ve got other great players in there as well.”

“Jonjo will help me. He has been fantastic every week. He’s always looking for me and he’s got a fantastic range of passes. At the beginning of the season he hadn’t got me an assist and I was constantly getting into his head before the game to say, ‘Get me an assist — help me out.’ The last few weeks he’s been fantastic and he’s picked me out a number of times,” he added.
