James Milner and the Premier League's best penalty takers

Liverpool's James Milner scores their first goal from the penalty spot

Liverpool's James Milner has been dubbed the best at taking penalties so we put his stats to the test against the likes of Eden Hazard, Leighton Baines and Yaya Toure.

Liverpool's German international Emre Can has named teammate James Milner as the best penalty taker he has ever seen. Milner, currently being deployed as a left-back by manager Jurgen Klopp, has scored four penalties in just six Premier League appearances so far this season. Data provided by Transfermarkt has been examined to discover the best career penalty-conversion rate among current Premier League players who have taken a significant number of penalties (more than ten).

The good news for Milner, and Can, is that the former Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Manchester City stalwart makes the top five. Here is the official count-down.

Liverpool's James Milner scores their first goal from the penalty spot

5. James Milner - England U21 (1), Aston Villa (9), Manchester City (1), Liverpool (7)

Despite Emre Can's claim that Milner is the best penalty taker he's seen, the 61-time-capped Englishman is statistically the fifth most successful current Premier League player at converting penalties. Since making his Premier League debut for Leeds United in 2002, Milner has scored 18 out of 21 spot kicks. This gives the 30-year-old an 85.7% success rate, placing him in fifth place.

Chelsea's Eden Hazard scores their first goal from the penalty spot

4. Eden Hazard - Belgium (9), Lille OSC (9), Chelsea (16)

Chelsea's Eden Hazard has taken 39 career penalties and scored an impressive 34. The only Premier League goalkeeper to deny Hazard from the spot was Crystal Palace's Julian Speroni in the 2014-15 season. Hazard's success rate throughout his career is 87.2%, which places him fourth in our list.

Everton's Leighton Baines takes a penalty that results in an own goal by Stoke City's Shay Given

3. Leighton Baines - Wigan Athletic (1), Everton (21)

From the penalty spot, Everton and England left-back Leighton Baines has a commendable success rate of 88%. Just one of his converted penalties was for Wigan Athletic, with 21 coming for the Toffees. 31-Year-old Baines has only missed three penalties since his career began in 2002 - with only Shay Given, David de Gea and Petr Cech denying the Liverpudlian.

West Ham's Mark Noble scores their first goal with a penalty

2. Mark Noble - West Ham United (27)

Midfield schemer Mark Noble has a tremendous penalty taking record. Statistics show that the 29-year-old Noble has scored 27 penalties for West Ham United since making his professional debut in 2004. Hugo Lloris, Petr Cech and Matt Duke are the goalkeepers responsible for Noble's three career penalty misses. This means that Noble has a 90% success rate from the penalty spot and lies in second place on the list.

Yaya Toure scores the second goal for Manchester City from the penalty spot

1. Yaya Toure - Ivory Coast (1), Manchester City (11)

Manchester City legend, and recent outcast, Yaya Toure is statistically the most successful penalty taker currently playing in the Premier League. The 33-year-old Ivorian has played 195 games for Manchester City, scoring 57 goals. Of these strikes, 11 have come from the 11 penalties taken for Manchester City. Toure has also scored one penalty for his country. This 100% record puts Yaya Toure at number one in our list - however, considering the significantly higher number of penalties the likes of Mark Noble, Eden Hazard, Leighton Baines and James Milner have taken in comparison, the Ivorian can count himself fortunate to be known as statistically the most efficient penalty taker of current Premier League players.
