Reports emanating from Spain today suggest that Arsenal are closely monitoring Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente, according to Spanish media outlet Don Balon.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at La Liga side Alaves, in a move that was aimed at nurturing his development by offering him the chance of more regular first-team football.

The report from Don Balon suggests that Arsenal could be in with a chance of landing Llorente next summer, should they offer him a lucrative contract, despite Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane wanting him to fight for a midfield spot with Casemiro next season.

It is debatable, however, whether the Gunners would be looking to strengthen in a department where they arguably have the strongest options in the Premier League, rather than focusing their attention on other areas in need of improvement.

Llorente does have wonderful ability though, and possesses impeccable technique, akin to current Arsenal midfield maestro Santi Cazorla, so maybe Arsene Wenger is eyeing the youngster as a long-term replacement for the 31-year-old.

Much will depend on Llorente’s performances for Alaves between now and the end of the season, but if he continues to impress, it would be no surprise if Arsenal do move for the talented youngster.
