Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has told the Daily Express that Jurgen Klopp has brought a new impetus to the club in the year he has been at the Reds, and has no doubts the German will deliver silverware for the club.

It will be a year since Klopp arrived at Anfield on Saturday when he replaced Brendan Rodgers in the manager’s hotseat.

Over the past year, the Reds have managed to reach two cup finals, missing out on both the League Cup and Europa League, but only finished eighth in the Premier League. This season the side has started impressively and currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League, just two points off the top of the table.

Houllier told the Daily Express: “It is not easy for a foreign coach coming into a new country. It is a different type of football and a different culture, but the Premier League is exciting as well because there is a culture of effort among the players.

“I like his attacking philosophy and I like the way his team stays in the opposition half to try and win the ball. It is a very demanding type of football but it is spectacular and entertaining.

“And I like the way he shows protection and affection to his players. Maybe he needs another year to win – we rebuilt in 1999 and had success in 2001.”

Houllier knows from experience the kind of job that it takes for someone to rebuild Liverpool and make them a competitive force again – as he made many changes during his first summer in sole charge of the club and within two years saw substantial success in the form of silverware – which saw Liverpool complete an incredible cup treble, with a second place finish following in 2002.

Klopp came very close to silverware last season, and has made one or two changes this season in terms of his players and seems to have allowed the side to kick on the domestic front. The weekend’s win over Swansea puts them in a healthy position after seven games, and they are now the joint highest scorers in the league along with Manchester City.
