A report in the Daily Mail has claimed that Arsenal have become the latest club to register an interest in the Sassuolo forward Gregoire Defrel.

The 25-year-old has been linked with several Premier League sides in recent times, with the Mail reporting that Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Swansea have all been keeping an eye on the Frenchman's progress.

However, they may all have to see off competition from the Gunners if they hope to land his signature as the Mail has added that Arsene Wenger has sent scouts to have a look at the striker after his fantastic start to the new season.

Despite previously boasting an underwhelming goalscoring record - Defrel scored just 16 times in 106 league games for former club Cesena - he has bagged the same amount of goals as Edin Dzeko and Gonzalo Higuain so far this term with four strikes coming in just five Serie A appearances.

And it is not just up front that Defrel can be deployed. He is also a very capable winger or attacking midfielder, and players in that position have seemingly always appealed to Wenger, even if that does not appear to be the area of the pitch that the squad needs strengthening in.

And if the former Parma trainee can maintain that form leading up to the January window, he may perhaps move himself further and further up Wenger's list of priority targets.
