Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia has hit back at claims from Rangers manager Mark Warburton regarding the sale transfer of Joleon Lescott to Ibrox.

Rangers’ move to sign Lescott from Aston Villa on a free transfer collapsed earlier this week.

The press gave differing reasons behind the failure of this deal.

The BBC reported he failed a medical whilst Sky Sports claimed he decided against a move as he did not want to uproot his family.

Aston Villa chairman Xia then tweeted regarding the deal collapsing:

However, speaking after Rangers’ 2-1 win over Motherwell at Ibrox yesterday Warburton made it clear family reasons were behind Lescott’s decision, before claiming Xia’s statement was ‘absolute nonsense’ – as reported by the Daily Record.

Now Xia has hit back again.

He tweeted last night, in response to the comments from the Rangers boss:

Warburton was clearly not pleased with the Villa chairman but it seems that the spat between Glasgow and the Midlands did not die with the Rangers’ manager’s ‘nonsense’ claim.

Rangers fans, and most likely Warburton, will now like to move on. The club must now secure a new defender, with Philippe Senderos looking likely to head to Ibrox in the coming days.
