Former player and current pundit Phil Thompson says he fears defensive mistakes from Liverpool’s side following their entertaining 4-3 win over Arsenal, Sky Sports report.

The Reds were without doubt involved in the best game of the opening weekend of the Premier League season, albeit largely as a result of both the Merseysiders and Arsenal struggling in defence.

Alberto Moreno was singled out for some heavy criticism from pundits and observers alike for another poor defensive display, and Thompson feels his former side must strengthen ahead of the transfer deadline.

"I don't think you can get carried away when your team defend like we did against Arsenal. I always fear defensive mistakes,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

“He (Jurgen Klopp) has come out and supported Moreno, which he has to because you don't know when you need the player, but there's two weeks to go and you'd imagine he's still in the market.

"The biggest problem is his poor concentration, which result in rash decisions. There was one headed clearance and another right-footed clearance that went across his box. It's decision-making in the vital areas."

The former Sevilla man’s poor challenge resulted in a penalty for Arsenal, and minutes later he was out of picture as Theo Walcott found acres of space in the box down Liverpool’s left to put the hosts ahead.

Klopp has already bolstered his side’s back five with additions of goalkeeper Loris Karius and centre-back duo Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan, yet further additions are evidently needed.

Moreno isn’t renowned for having good positional sense, but Klopp’s pressing mentality arguably makes the Spaniard even more prone to mistakes as he attempts to do even the basics at 100 mph.

Liverpool face Burnley at Turf Moor this weekend where they will be confident of securing all thee points despite their defensive troubles.
