Former Arsenal hero Paul Merson has questioned why they did not make a move for Manchester United’s new centre-back Eric Bailly, speaking to Sky Sports.

The Gunners are in the midst of a defensive crisis at this moment in time, with no senior centre-backs currently fully fit.

Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista have both picked up injuries while Laurent Koscielny is short on fitness after spending the summer with France at Euro 2016.

As a result, they are on the hunt for a new centre-back before the end of the transfer window, with Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi looking like their main target.

Merson though, has questioned why they didn’t make a move for Bailly, who has made a strong start to life in the Premier League after joining United this summer.

“The Manchester United centre-half looks like a [proper] centre-half,” he told Sky Sports.

“I just look at the Man United lad and think ‘why haven’t Arsenal gone for him? He looks like a player.”

It now remains to be seen if Arsenal can secure the centre-back that their side desperately needs before the window closes.

Much will rest on whether Arsene Wenger is willing to pay the money needed given he has so far been resistant to splash the cash.

But as the transfer window nears its conclusion asking prices are only going to rise and it will be interesting to see if Wenger is willing to pay them to fix this major issue.
