Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has told talkSPORT that he admires Arsene Wenger’s refusal to spend big money at the club.

The Gunners chief is coming in for increasing criticism once again this summer over his lack of spending in the transfer window.

While the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City have spent vast sums to ensure they are title contenders, Arsenal’s only major signing has been midfielder Granit Xhaka.

That has infuriated the club’s fans, who showed their disapproval during last weeks 4-3 loss to Liverpool at the Emirates.

Indeed the critics have been widespread, but Vieira says he actually admires his former manager’s refusal to spend.

“Money always helps you but it doesn’t guarantee you success," he told talkSPORT.

“In one way I admire him [Wenger] because he didn’t splash the money and buy players he believed couldn’t help the team and make it better. That is something you have to admire.”

It will now be interesting to see if Wenger actually bows to the pressure and decides to splash the cash before the end of the transfer window.

His side is hardly in need of an overhaul, but it is undeniable that they are short in one or two areas compared to their main competitors.

So far the Frenchman has failed to add them, and it remains to be seen if that remains the case before the transfer window slams shut.
