Derby County boss Nigel Pearson says he did not reject Aston Villa ahead of becoming Derby County boss despite holding talks to become Villa’s new manager in June, the BBC report.

The former Leicester City manager had been out of work for 12 months after receiving his marching orders at the King Power Stadium, with the Foxes going on to win the Premier League title.

Many attribute Leicester’s success in part down to Pearson as a good chunk of the squad was brought together under his tenure, and as a result he is held in high regard.

With Villa and Derby both managerless heading in to the summer, Pearson was heavily linked with both Midlands clubs before ultimately opting for the Rams while Villa appointed Roberto Di Matteo.

Many speculated that Pearson chose Derby over Villa, but the former defender has rebuffed those claims as he tells reporters for the BBC of the situation over the summer.

“There was no crossover between the Aston Villa and the Derby situations,” Peason said. “I'm always very wary of the types of stories where it's said you trade one off for the other and it's comparative. It didn't happen like that.

"The negotiation that went on, went on. It didn't happen. Then this opportunity came along and it did materialise - and I'm delighted that I'm here."

Both Villa and Derby have begun their Championship campaigns by taking four points from three matches.

Derby head in to the game coming off the back of a 1-0 win at Preston North End, while Villa on the other hand were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield Town.
