Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has explained to BBC Sport why Dele Alli didn't start against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The England international midfielder did, however, come on as a substitute in the 68th minute, as Tottenham registered a narrow 1-0 victory over their London rivals.

"Dele Alli had some problems, he was ill for three days this week and not 100%,” Pochettino told BBC Sport.

“We have a lot of games with the Champions League this season and we have to manage them to be in a better condition for the season.

The Tottenham manager also praised Michel Vorm for his performance on Saturday afternoon.

The Netherlands international goalkeeper, who joined Spurs from Swansea City in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Star to be worth £3.5 million, played against Palace due to the injury suffered by first-choice custodian Hugo Lloris last weekend.

"Michel Vorm’s work was important too. It is not easy to replace Hugo Lloris and he did very well."

Over the course of the 90 minutes at White Hart Lane, hosts Tottenham had 57% of the possession, took 20 shots of which just five were on target, and earned 10 corners, according to BBC Sport.

According to BBC Sport, visitors Palace had 43% of the possession, took 10 shots of which only two were on target, and earned four corners.
