Three men that could shine in Newcastle's game vs Bristol City

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez

Which 3 men are likely to shine for Newcastle in their game against Bristol City on the weekend?

Newcastle continue their Championship campaign with a game against Bristol City.

After a victory against Reading, Newcastle must keep up the momentum by claiming three points against Bristol, but who could star for them in the game?

Jonjo Shelvey

The former Swansea midfield has found form in the Championship as he put in a very good display against Reading. His passing range and attacking runs gave Newcastle a real driving force from the centre of their midfield - something they have been missing so far in the Championship.

A problem that frustrated Swansea fans and will no doubt do the same to Newcastle fans, is his inability to play consistently. His propensity to blow hot and cold is one he must find a way to shake; one match he will be superb and run the game, the next he will be laboured and look disinterested.

Now that Newcastle have picked up their first victory in the Championship, they must look to utilise their momentum. Rafael Benitez is a fine manager and one which is probably costing Newcastle a lot of money to employ.

So it is here that he must earn his keep. The manager must find a way to maintain Shelvey's high performances and when he has his dips in form, there must only be a slight dip and they must be short lived.

The English midfielder is undeniably talented and, if he plays to his potential, he will not merely be one of Newcastle's best players, but one of the Championship's stand-out performers.

Dwight Gayle

The striker was brought in from Crystal Palace to do a very obvious job that he has found difficult thus far. He looked very isolated in the opening two games as Newcastle struggled to create much going forward.

Perhaps their title of favourites has weighed heavily on both the Toon’s mind, and that of their opponents who have suffocated their attacking players by defending in numbers, staying compact and looking to counter-attack.

It has been a difficult start for Newcastle to say the least. However, in the game against Reading, Newcastle looked far better: their attacking threat finally came through for them when Matt Ritchie scored a fine goal in conjunction with Gayle scoring two out of the other three goals.

First, Gayle curled in a fine free-kick before tapping home his second to get his goal scoring campaign off and running. Benitez will be hoping that Gayle’s undeniable talent will shine through now that he has his first Championship goals. The striker is a man with a lot of pace and intelligence while he is also very clinical in-front of goal.

As previously mentioned, he was brought in to do a job at Newcastle. Now that he has his first league goals, it is likely that Gayle’s name will crop up on the score-line quite often this season.

The goalkeeper is a surprising name on the list considering the offensive talent that Newcastle have under their employment. However, the Belgian could yet hold the key to Newcastle’s success, especially over the next few weeks.

The 24-year-old has looked shaky at times in the Championship with his handling and footwork under scrutiny already. While he is an undeniably talented shot-stopper, he must become a more reliable goalkeeper.

With Tim Krul’s return on the horizon, Selz isn’t just playing to impress, he is now playing for his place. Krul is a superb goalkeeper that wouldn’t find it difficult to walk into most teams, so Selz will have to be at his best to keep Krul out.

This added pressure could be exactly why Selz can win Newcastle their next game. Playing for his place could either destroy his confidence or it could spur him on hugely and make him a far better player. Only time will tell how Selz deals with the pressure though.
