Portugal's Jose Fonte celebrates
Arsenal fans have had to endure a frustrating summer transfer window yet again, as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger continues to refuse to pay what he deems as extortionate prices for potential transfer targets.
With Laurent Koscielny being nursed back from a gruelling Euro 2016 campaign, and club captain Per Mertesacker ruled out with a long-term knee injury, Arsenal have had to rely on the inexperienced duo Calum Chambers and Rob Holding at the centre of defence.

The untried pairing were, probably unfairly, made out as scapegoats for Arsenal's abysmal opening day 4-3 loss to Liverpool, and the lack of defensive cohesion highlighted the pressing need for Wenger to strengthen his back-line.
SkyBet still make Manchester United 2/1 favourites to sign the Portuguese, although it is debatable whether or not they actually need the 32-year-old.

Arsene Wenger's need for an experienced defender is far more pressing, and with their move for Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi appearing to hit the buffers, a move for Fonte would make complete sense.
Whether Southampton would entertain the sale of another of their star players remains to be seen, however.
