Alan Shearer has predicted on that Newcastle United will go on a winning run in the Championship.

Newcastle registered their first competitive win of the season on Wednesday evening when they defeated Reading 4-1 at home in the league.

The victory over the Royals at St. James’ Park followed defeats to Fulham away from home at Craven Cottage in London and to Huddersfield Town.

Newcastle legend Shearer believes that Rafael Benitez’s side will now put together a run of positive results.

The former England international striker has also backed the Magpies to get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Former Blackburn Rovers player Alan Shearer introduced to the crowd ahead of the game

“I said before the season started that I didn’t think it would be as easy for Newcastle in the Championship as everyone thought and the odds suggested, and they’ve got off to a rocky start,” Shearer wrote on

“It’s a long hard season, and they lost their opening two games, but I do think they are going to get promoted, whether that’s as one of the two teams who get automatic promotion or through the play-offs.

“It was just important to get that first win, as they did against Reading, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they went on a bit of a run now they’ve got that little bit of confidence. The pressure is now off them and winning is a great feeling.”

Newcastle, who got relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, will take on Bristol City away from home at the Ashton Gate Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Benitez’s side will head into the game as favourites and with confidence, and they should be able to pick up all three points with relative ease.

City lost 1-0 to Norwich City away from home at Carrow Road in the Championship on Tuesday evening.
