Sunderland have announced on their official website that they have signed Steven Pienaar on a deal until the end of the season after the winger was released by Everton.

The 34-year-old made just six appearances last season after struggling with injuries for several years and links up once again with David Moyes who took him to the Toffees from Borussia Dortmund in 2007.

Pienaar made over 200 appearances in two spells for Everton after initially departing for Tottenham in 2011 before he returned to Merseyside and to Moyes a year later.

The former South African international is now preparing to play under the Scotsman for the third time in his career, with The Black Cats confirming a deal has been agreed on their website.

Pienaar spent a total of nine years at Everton, forming a lethal partnership with left-back Leighton Baines which saw a gluttony of goals at Goodison Park from the left-hand side.

But as injuries caught up with him, he saw appearances dwindle following Moyes' departure to Manchester United in 2013, making just 36 league appearances in three years under Roberto Martinez.

Now looking to continue his career in the top flight for at least another season, he becomes Sunderland's fourth signing of the summer window following the signings of defenders Paddy McNair and Donald Love from United and Papy Djilobodji from Chelsea.
