The Bafana Bafana legend has been without a club since being released by Everton earlier this summer.
Of course new Sunderland boss David Moyes knows the player well, having worked with him at Goodison Park.
Pienaar has signed a one-year deal and on paper it looks a good squad signing from the Black Cats.
But it is fair to say that Sunderland fans have not seen it that way.

Frustrated with the club’s transfer business so far many are struggling to understand why Pienaar has been signed, despite clearly impressing during a trial period.
His injury problems in recent years have been terrible. He featured just six times for Everton last season and only 11 times in 2014-15 – so their concern is understandable.
Sunderland manager David Moyes
Upon his return to action with Everton last season he looked woefully off the pace and at 34-years-old it appears his injury troubles have taken their toll on the South African.
Sunderland fans will be hoping he can prove them wrong. But for now the Black Cats’ faithful are not happy…
While Pienaar isn't Mvila, we've begged for increasing squad depth, he signs someone that does and we go off it— Chris (@SAFCChris97) August 19, 2016

If Pienaar is standard of signing expected at @SunderlandAFC then they can do one. Why should people spend their money when the club don't!— John Daniel Kelly (@johnsafc87) August 19, 2016
Steven Pienaar man?! Sunderland literally taken the TV money and hidden it away... #haway— Josh Guthrie (@JoshuaGuthrie) August 19, 2016
#SAFC have signed Steven Pienaar. He's 34 and joined for nowt. Kone has been offered a new contract and is yet to accept. Meltdown imminent— Chris Weatherspoon (@christoph_21) August 19, 2016
Think I'd rather have kept Jordi Gomez than signed Steven Pienaar. #SAFC— Bateman (@NYJetster) August 19, 2016
If Pienaar has proved himself then fair enough. But wish it was a DM or a CH— Allan Davis (@davis0688) August 19, 2016
