The defender's transfer to Rangers has fallen through.
Arsenal's Jack Wilshere in action with Aston Villa's Joleon Lescott
Rangers and Aston Villa fans have been reacting on Twitter to the news that Joleon Lescott's move from Villa Park to Glasgow has fallen through, and it wasn't particularly pleasant reading for fans of the defender.
The former England international looked to be on the cusp of moving to Scottish giants Rangers this week, with Gers manager Mark Warburton talking up a switch only a couple of days ago.
Sky Sports reported that the move broke down after the player decided against a move for family reasons, something Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia confirmed on Twitter, while other reports suggested the player failed a medical.
Sky is right this time. No problem with medical check. https://t.co/kjOqfg1Bmr— Dr. Tony Xia (@Dr_TonyXia) August 19, 2016
But the 34-year-old's immediate future remains at Villa, the club he supported as a boy, despite that future seeming to be in the club's reserve side after Roberto Di Matteo made it clear he is not in his first team plans.
The move breakdown is another sour episode in the later years of the former Everton and Manchester City star, with Lescott falling out with his own supporters last season after a series of social media mishaps, not helped by the fact he was part of a side that suffered relegation from the Premier League for the first time in Villa's history.
It appeared as if Lescott might end up joining Mark Warburton's excellent Rangers side on a free transfer on their return to the Scottish top flight, but now the Gers will turn to other options to strengthen their defence.

Any sensible, legal, ideas how we can get rid of Joleon Lescott from Villa? Someone must be a wacky plan that might work #AVFC— Kevin Hughes (@kevinhughes348) August 19, 2016
2 weeks to get rid of Lescott, Gabby, Richards and Traore.. If they do a NZog and sit it out then it will cost us about £200k a week #avfc— Brett Griffiths (@X7JBG) August 19, 2016
Even though Lescott hasn't moved on today, you have to give RDM and Xia some credit for the pace we've moved at in the past 2/3 weeks. #avfc— Andrew Roden (@andrewroden) August 19, 2016
I really hope Lescott has got something else lined up. He's not done himself any favours again. #AVFC— James Hanrahan (@james_hanrahan) August 19, 2016
Gutted Lescott deal is off, reckon he would have walked it up here... Announce Senderos @RangersFC— BlueRyu (@Ryan_Haymarch) August 19, 2016
Well the lescott deal is well & truly dead what Evers for you will never go by you. Plenty more good CB out there @RangersFC— david mclenaghan (@davidmclenaghan) August 19, 2016
Disappointed to hear that Lescott isn't signing. Money minded player at the end of the day. He's missed the opportunity to play @RangersFC— stephen mcdermott (@stephmcd90) August 19, 2016
