Rangers and Aston Villa fans have been reacting on Twitter to the news that Joleon Lescott's move from Villa Park to Glasgow has fallen through, and it wasn't particularly pleasant reading for fans of the defender.

The former England international looked to be on the cusp of moving to Scottish giants Rangers this week, with Gers manager Mark Warburton talking up a switch only a couple of days ago.

Sky Sports reported that the move broke down after the player decided against a move for family reasons, something Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia confirmed on Twitter, while other reports suggested the player failed a medical.

But the 34-year-old's immediate future remains at Villa, the club he supported as a boy, despite that future seeming to be in the club's reserve side after Roberto Di Matteo made it clear he is not in his first team plans.

The move breakdown is another sour episode in the later years of the former Everton and Manchester City star, with Lescott falling out with his own supporters last season after a series of social media mishaps, not helped by the fact he was part of a side that suffered relegation from the Premier League for the first time in Villa's history.

It appeared as if Lescott might end up joining Mark Warburton's excellent Rangers side on a free transfer on their return to the Scottish top flight, but now the Gers will turn to other options to strengthen their defence.
