Rangers have taken Philippe Senderos on trial this week.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton has told a press conference, as seen on the club's official YouTube channel, that he 'can't speak highly enough' of trialist Philippe Senderos.

The Gers have been looking for experienced defenders to help solidify their defence this summer, and whilst Clint Hill arrived on a free transfer back in June, manager Warburton has been searching for another veteran centre back.

A host of players have been linked with filling that role, but earlier this week, Rangers decided to take former Arsenal centre back Philippe Senderos on a week-long trial period.

The 31-year-old defender is a free agent having left Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich earlier this summer, and Warburton handed him the chance to impress as Rangers look for a new defender.

Senderos is best known for his spell with Arsenal, where he made more than 100 appearances, but he's also had spells with Everton, AC Milan, Fulham, Valencia and Aston Villa, whilst he's also played for Switzerland at three World Cups, racking up 57 caps for his country.

That experience is what Rangers are looking for, and manager Warburton admitted that he 'can't speak highly enough' of Senderos having impressed in training this week, particularly with his fitness.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, as seen on the club's official YouTube channel, Warburton hailed Senderos for how he's performed in training this week, but did note that the player has returned to Switzerland for a few days.

"I can't speak highly enough of Philippe Senderos," said Warburton. "He came in, hadn't been training with a team for a few weeks, but his level of fitness is outstanding. His CV is well documented, but his level of fitness and the way he has fitted into the group have been first class. He has dealt with training effortlessly all week so we have to look at a number of options and I have been very impressed by Philippe."

"He's training with us, won't be involved at the weekend as he's gone back to Geneva for a couple of days, but we're very pleased with what we've seen and we have to make sure that we look at all our options," he added.

The problem for Senderos is that, whilst he's been training with Rangers, Warburton may have actually already found the experienced centre back he's looking for.

BBC Sport claim that Aston Villa's 34-year-old defender Joleon Lescott is set to undergo a medical with Rangers ahead of signing for the club - and with Rob Kiernan, Danny Wilson and Clint Hill already at the club, it's hard to see Warburton accommodating Senderos by carrying five central defenders this season, which would again leave Senderos without a club.
