Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has explained to The Glasgow Evening Times why winning against Rangers is more realistic than defeating Celtic.

McGhee’s side will take on Scottish giants Rangers away from home at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon.

Mark Warburton’s team will head into the game as favourites, but the Motherwell boss is not giving up hope of picking up all three points from the match in Glasgow.

The 59-year-old has explained why winning against the Gers is more realistic than defeating Celtic.

“I think Mark is still buying players that he might be able to make into a player, along with the likes of Joey Barton who are established,” McGhee told The Glasgow Evening Times.

“He’s still buying players that he could turn into a better player like Sinclair. He’s not at the level of finances yet where they can go and buy a Sinclair.

“I think in that respect we are closer to them. However, all I’ll remind people of is Leicester City. We won’t make excuses, it’s just the way it is that we can’t always compete with Celtic but next time we play them we’ll try and beat them. Every time we play Rangers we’ll try and do the same, it just seems a bit more realistic."

Motherwell faced defending Scottish Premiership champions Celtic away from home at Celtic Park in the second round of the Scottish League Cup earlier this month.

Brendan Rodgers’s side eased past Well 5-0 at home, with Tom Rogic and Moussa Dembele scoring two goals each.

Meanwhile, Rangers have made a strong start to the 2016-17 Scottish Premiership campaign.

The Gers kicked off their league season with a 1-1 draw with Hamilton Academical at Ibrox before getting the better of Dundee 2-1 away from home at Dens Park.
