Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted to the Daily Mail that they are not scared to spend the money available to them.

The Gunners have been quiet this summer, with Granit Xhaka their only major arrival so far.

That has angered the club’s fans, who have had to sit and watch while the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United have spent vast sums improving their squads.

The situation has seen Wenger come in for criticism once again, with fans booing him during the 4-3 loss to Liverpool last Sunday.

The main fear is that their lack of spending will leave them struggling to compete, but Wenger has promised they intend to buy before the end of the transfer window.

“Before you pay over the odds you have to be convinced by the player. Can he strengthen your squad?” he told the Daily Mail.

“Then you must have the money available to pay, because we already invested at a very high price. And we will do so again. We work very hard and I cannot tell you much more. We are not scared to spend the money. It is about the quality.”

It remains to be seen if Arsenal do get more transfer deals completed before the window slams shut.

A central defender is a priority given the current situation at the club, while the club’s fans would also be delighted to see a new striker arrive at the club.

At this late stage though, it will be interesting to see if Wenger can find the quality that he deems worthy of spending big sums on.
