Jonjo Shelvey was in fine form for Newcastle United as they beat Reading in their mid-week clash.

The Magpies hosted Jaap Staam’s side at St James' Park on Wednesday seeking their first win of the season.

They did just that with a double from Dwight Gayle as well as goals from Matt Ritchie and Isaac Hayden, which saw them to a 4-1 win.

Shelvey was a surprise starter in the game after being somewhat frozen out under Rafa Benitez since his arrival.

He managed 60 touches in total, with all of those proving to be successful ones.

Defensively he was solid, winning two tackles and four interceptions, the latter of which was the most managed by any player in the game.
