Atletico Madrid, since winning the title in 2013/14, have finished third in the last two seasons.

Diego Simeone has strengthened his already superb squad with the signings of Kevin Gameiro, Nico Gaitan and Sime Vrsaljko, most notably.

Terry Gibson, speaking on Sky Sports’ La Liga weekly podcast, thinks the side from the capital can mount another strong challenge this time round, with a new signing playing a key part.

"I tipped Atletico when they won it and I have tipped them ever since, for the last two seasons they haven't delivered, but I am going to stick with them," he said on the Sky Sports podcast.

"Gameiro could be the difference, they have been crying out for another striker alongside (Antoine) Griezmann and that has the look of an exciting partnership.”

Gibson continued, citing the work that Atletico have done in the off-season could give them an edge.

"Also I look at the pre-season of the top teams and I think they are going to be the powerful team at the start of the season,” he said. “All their South American players were back early from the Copa America and they have done a proper pre-season.”

"I think they are in the best shape at the start of the season.

"Atletico must make the most of their advantage at the start of the season. They need to put themselves in a good position after seven or eight games.”

La Liga will be very much in their sights and the mentality to match a tight-spending Real Madrid and strength-in-depth Barcelona will be driven by Simeone once more.

Even if the tools at the boss’ disposal have been better than ever before, Atletico will still be worked harder than ever to achieve what Gibson thinks they can.

The new La Liga season kicks off on Friday, and Atletico welcome Deportivo Alaves to the Vicente Calderon in the last match of the weekend.
