Rangers are in pole position to sign Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott, with The BBC reporting they are holding talks with the centre-back.

Lescott was previously linked by The Telegraph to Leeds United, but the Whites have not followed up interest in the defender.

Lescott infuriated Villa fans last season during their atrocious Premier League campaign, with supporters expecting better on pitch performances from him, and were frustrated by his attitude, accusing him of not caring enough.

The defender was involved in public spats with ex-Villa striker Stan Collymore, and has not been selected by current boss Roberto di Matteo this season, who recently signed James Chester at centre-back.

Rangers have added veteran defender Clint Hill, and have had Lescott's former Villa teammate Philippe Senderos training with them this week, The BBC reported.

Manager Mark Warburton is clearly going for experience in his backline, and is hoping Lescott can recapture the vigour shown in his performances for Manchester City as he helped them to win the Premier League in 2012.
