Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has told the Birmingham Mail that defender Joleon Lescott is looking to move on - but isn't sure how far along his move to Rangers is.

Villa picked up a 1-1 home draw with Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night, as after Ross McCormack had bagged his first Villa goal with a close-range header, Michael Hefele scored a late equaliser, with the German charging down Pierluigi Gollini's clearance into the net for a remarkable goal.

Di Matteo will be disappointed to have thrown away the 1-0 lead, but after the game, the attention turned back to transfers as he was asked about the situation regarding defender Joleon Lescott.

Lescott, 34, is currently frozen out at Villa Park just a year after signing from local rivals West Bromwich Albion, with the former England defender seemingly free to leave Villa.

A disappointment last season as Villa suffered relegation to the Championship, boyhood Villa fan Lescott still has a year left on his contract at Villa Park, but reports suggest he could be on his way out of the club by the end of the week.

The Daily Mail report that Lescott is close to signing for Rangers having held talks with manager Mark Warburton on Tuesday afternoon, with the report even suggesting that Villa are prepared to push the move along by paying up the final year of Lescott's £35,000-a-week deal.

With Lescott seemingly set to leave, Di Matteo was asked about the situation by the Birmingham Mail following Tuesday's draw with Huddersfield - but he wasn't sure on the latest regarding a possible move to Ibrox for the ex-Everton centre back.

Di Matteo confirmed that Lescott is looking to secure a transfer away from the club, but having been busy preparing to face Huddersfield, he didn't know whether Lescott's move to Rangers was as close as reported.

"Lescott is looking to move on." said Di Matteo. "Possibly, I don't know. I read that in the papers as well. I was preparing the game so maybe I'm not up to the latest," he added when asked about the Rangers rumours.
