The Italian goalkeeper's distribution let him down again
£12 million summer signing Ross McCormack opened his Villa account early in the first half, but Hefele equalised inadvertently three minutes from time when he was struck by Pierluigi Gollini's attempted clearance, which rebounded into an empty net.
It was only the second goal Roberto Di Matteo's side have conceded in the league this season - though the two bear striking similarities.
There were five minutes left on the clock when Fernando Forestieri struck Sheffield Wednesday's winner on the campaign's opening weekend, having pounced on a loose ball following his fellow Italian's sliced clearance.
Most Villa fans assumed their goalkeeping troubles were over following Brad Guzan's departure to Middlesbrough last month, especially having paid £4.25 million for his replacement Gollini.
Understandably, the 21-year-old bore the brunt of the fans' frustrations on social media - though plenty of kind souls were also out in force.
This is what they are saying...
Gollini could cut someone's throat in the middle of pitch & itll be someone else's fault, hope kicking was first on the agenda this morning— Chris Sargent (@ManOfSteel_91) 17 August 2016
After my research last night I calculated gollini might only make another 29472 mistakes this season— # (@RemzzAVFC) 17 August 2016
2 goals we've conceded in the league this season has been from Gollini's distribution #avfc— Alistair Macnaghten (@Alistair_WW_Mac) 16 August 2016
Gollini will make is 7th mistake in 10 games & fans will still find excuses an experienced GK challenging him or vice versa would help alot— Chris Sargent (@ManOfSteel_91) 16 August 2016
I don't like gollini— flash capone (@HSJ1738) 17 August 2016

First season in English football De Gea had his problems too and look at him now. Gollini is a young talent learning his trade. Top man soon— George Scott (@Sc1George) 17 August 2016
Think gollini been a bit unfortunate, not gonna jump on his back just yet— Paul Jeary (@pjeary) 17 August 2016
Can people stop saying Gollini made a mistake! That goal was not his mistake it was a freak goal that 9.9x10 it would flown past the striker— chris mayne (@chrismayne13) 17 August 2016
I know opinions differ but don't think Gollini was at fault last night...Elphick should of cleared it he had time too..#avfc— Stewart Cole (@stewartcole79) 17 August 2016
Wish everyone would lay off Gollini Throwing him under the bus will only make it worse. Let's put our arm around the kid and move on. #avfc— Murfs (@MurfsYT13) 17 August 2016
