Chris Sutton has praised Celtic summer signing Kolo Toure on social networking site Twitter, but he has claimed that the former Liverpool defender is not as good on the ball as Virgil van Dijk of Southampton.

Celtic signed 35-year-old centre-back Toure in the summer transfer window on a free following his departure from Premier League club Liverpool at the end of last season.

The former Ivory Coast international is past his prime, but he is a hugely experienced footballer who has also played for Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City.

Former Celtic striker Sutton, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport, has praised Toure for his reading of the game and for being a leader at the back.

The Englishman, though, believes that the Celtic summer signing is not as good as Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk on the ball.

Van Dijk joined Southampton from the Bhoys in the summer of 2015 after spending two years at Celtic Park.

The Netherlands international established himself as the best centre-back in the Scottish Premiership during his time at Celtic.

The 25-year-old former Groningen defender enjoyed a successful 2015-16 season for Southampton in the Premier League.
